Hello and thank you for visiting my website!
My debut picture book, Lily and the Polar Bears, has just been published by Faber, hooray! Thank you to everyone who's bought it so far. I'm now working on more picture books, a chapter book and a YA novel in verse.
I was born in Liverpool and grew up in Brighton though my name is not very English because my Dad is Iranian. (I can't speak Farsi but I can say essential phrases like "Can I have an ice cream please?").
Now I live in Paris, where I run my own English language schools for kids (www.anglofun.fr) along with my husband. I am Mum to two adorable children, Oscar and Stella, who are constantly getting up to mischief and giving me lots of ideas for stories. You might even be able to spot them both in my portfolio...
To become an illustrator, I didn't go to art school. I studied English Literature at Somerville College, Oxford where I got to read loads of lovely books. Then I practiced drawing A LOT, by myself. The first polar bear pictures I drew were absolutely TERRIBLE and I will never ever show them to anyone (unless you bribe me with custard creams or sweets, that'll usually work)
I work in a little hut in my garden and to the right you can glimpse some of the materials I use. I like to experiment with a variety of medium but my favourites at the moment are pen and ink with watercolours and collage. One of my favourite collage materials to use is my collection of Disney magazines from the 1950s. I don't use the computer much when drawing, except to make final adjustments.
I also play the violin and sometimes use it in workshops and festivals to help bring my stories to life. For commissions, school visits or random questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org
